Our territories are situated on the Southern and South-Western hills of Zala valley. Thanks to the ideal climatic and soil conditions these hills have been producing ecxellent grape for centuries.
The hillside is built by the sandy-chalky deposits ofwhat used to be the Pannonic inner-sea over a strate of löess, more or less thick, with traces of brown forrest soils. The weather conditions – wind, rain, climate – are perfect for producing quality wine. The average annual temperature is between 9 and 11 degrees, which in summer months arrives between 16 and 25 degrees. Heat changes are little – summer is not too hot, winter is not too cold. There are no major cases of frost damage. The distribution of light is good, the annual quantity of sunlight is between 700 and 900 mm. The valleys are open towards North-South in accordance with the ruling wind directions, which has a positive effect on plant protection. The leaves remain this way covered by water for less time.
The species we grow are the following: Riesling, Müller Thurgau, Chardonnay, Pintes, Zöldveltelini, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Blue frankish.
The oldest of our plantations is the 1968 Rizlingszilváni, on the Kozári hilltop. Despite being more than 50 years old and having been a property of the local state-owned agricultural corporation during the comunist regime, it rewards hard work year after year with a beautiful harvest. Our newly planted vineyards are becoming productive step by step. Our territories carry an average of 4.600 stock/hectare in the new settlements and 3.500 stocks/hectare in the old ones. We use the Guyot-system, with a carriage of 1.5 kgs/stock. Protecting the environment is another priority of ours. We have been using integrated plant protecting methods for years, using only environment-friendly products. As a part of this process, we distribute quintals of sunflower seeds every year to birds nesting in our territories. Thanks to the growing population of birds the damage caused by insects has disappeared almost completely. The presence of birds, on the other hand, has attracted a large number of birds of prey, which is also important for keeping away starlings.
We keep on trying our best to help the process of perfect maturation. The first and most important step in this direction is pruning. We usually leave one cane long-bois and a short spur. In the summer months we set the producing quantity with summer pruning works and green harvest.
Our grapes are harvested at full biological maturity. Fruit already harvested is pressed carefully after destemming. During the procedure we try to preserve all the quality components that are proper of mature, healthy grape. Our storing tanks are for the most part made of inoxidable steel – the rest are casks. Fermentation is also made in steel barrels.
The maturation of wines may last a couple of months or even several years – depending on the type – before it is bottled.
